As time passes, it has become clearer what the present Government intends to do with the NHS. Another example of how the Government's push for privatisation has caused closure of NHS hospital wards can be found in the Greater Manchester area, where millions of pounds have been diverted away from the NHS to fund private centres. In its attempt to cut waiting times, the area strategic health committee signed a 5 year flat rate contract with South African based Netcare, who employ South African doctors to carry out non-emergency surgeries. The flat rate means that the centre will be paid £10 million a year, regardless of the number of operations it carries out.
